Ever since I did the iron pour at Franconia Sculpture Park I’ve really wanted to get back into mold making. I’ve always kept my molds pretty simple. Even now I’m only making two-part molds, but I decided to change up the materials. I have always used resin-bonded sand for my molds considering I was always pouring metals and only making one of a kind pieces. I wanted to start thinking about making multiples and working in other mediums like rubber, plastic and wax…and obviously still with metal. So I started tested out silicone.

I have been using GI-1000 from Silicones Inc. since it’s readily available to to me. I made a few molds to make some Christmas gifts for everyone. Here is the final result.

I’ve been pretty obsessed with knots recently. I just tied a few different types of knots and made a two part mold of each of them. Luckily the GI-1000 can withstand 400 degrees of heat, so casting some low heat metal was a breeze. But for the record, brass….is WAY too hot.

This is just the beginning on some new casting stuff I’m working on. Keep checking back for updates on the coffee table I’m working on as well as some lathe work I’m doing.
